The St. Louis Cardinals are beginning to resemble a team preparing to sell assets ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline.
However, with a new front office regime led by Chaim Bloom, it’s unclear if the team would part with any players who could factor into their long-term success.
While that’s still speculative, it’s been a consistent theme throughout the season. Nevertheless, FanSided’s Thomas Gauvain offered a surprising take—suggesting that St. Louis should consider trading infielder Thomas Saggese.

“Infielder Thomas Saggese,” Gauvain said. “Back in April, I mentioned that Saggese might be the odd man out amid the Cardinals’ youth movement.
That still seems to be true as we approach the end of July. Saggese was acquired from the Texas Rangers in 2023, part of the return for Chris Stratton and Jordan Montgomery. The Cardinals received a solid group of prospects in that deal, including John King, Tekoah Roby, and Saggese.
“He made a quick impression by winning Texas League MVP that same year, putting up a 1.064 OPS with 10 homers and 29 RBIs for Double-A Springfield. He’s proven versatile across the infield and has even started logging some outfield time.

The issue is that St. Louis has an overload of middle infield talent. Brendan Donovan is a utility man but fits best at second base, which is also Nolan Gorman’s ideal position. Masyn Winn has shortstop locked down long-term, and top prospect JJ Wetherholt is closing in behind Saggese.”
While Gauvain makes a valid argument, a trade involving Saggese seems unlikely given Bloom’s arrival and the team’s focus on future sustainability.
