The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a season that, while ending earlier than hoped, was seen as a success by many. Following a surprising 2023 campaign and a major overhaul in the coaching staff, they earned a playoff spot.
Now, the focus has shifted to assembling a championship-caliber roster for the 2025 season. While free agency and the NFL Draft aren’t at the forefront at the moment, the Chargers still have ways to strengthen their lineup.
One such path could be through the trade market. The secondary remains a key area needing improvement, and trading for a top-tier cornerback like Jaire Alexander could significantly impact the team’s performance. With his future in Green Bay uncertain, a move to Los Angeles could be mutually beneficial for both Alexander and the Chargers, who are aiming to reinforce their defensive backfield.
According to ESPN analyst Matt Bowen, Alexander would be a major upgrade for the Chargers’ secondary. He even labeled Los Angeles as the most suitable destination for the standout defensive back.
“The Chargers brought in Donte Jackson on a two-year deal and Benjamin St-Juste on a one-year contract this offseason,” Bowen noted. “But if Alexander is available via trade, he would be a better fit in Jesse Minter’s defensive scheme.”
Bowen highlighted that the Chargers play a zone-heavy system featuring both Cover 3 and split-safety looks, which aligns well with Alexander’s strengths. His quick reactions, route recognition, and ability to break on the ball have helped him tally 12 interceptions and 57 pass breakups over his career.
Despite uncertainty surrounding his status in Green Bay, the Packers have yet to suggest they plan to move on from Alexander. The 28-year-old cornerback, originally taken 18th overall out of Louisville, is widely recognized as one of the league’s elite cover men. He’s earned Second-Team All-Pro honors and has been selected to two Pro Bowls.
The Chargers’ defense, especially the secondary, showed vast improvement last season, finishing just outside the top 10 in average yards allowed per game (324.4). Though they fell short in the playoffs, their consistency over the 17-game regular season was a positive step forward.
With hopes of contending for the division title and challenging the Kansas City Chiefs, adding a proven playmaker like Alexander could be a crucial move in narrowing the gap in the AFC West.
