The Longhorns are bolstering their quarterback depth.

Texas football has bolstered its quarterback depth with the addition of a preferred walk-on. The Longhorns are gearing up for an exciting 2025 season, with Arch Manning set to take over as the starting quarterback. Under Steve Sarkisian, the program has been revitalized, making back-to-back College Football Playoff semifinal appearances, most recently falling to eventual champion Ohio State.

Adding to the momentum, quarterback Luke Dunham has joined Texas as a preferred walk-on, as confirmed by Sports Illustrated’s Texas Longhorns reporter Zach Dimmitt. An Austin native, the 6’3″, 185-pound left-handed signal-caller brings intriguing dual-threat ability, having recorded a 4.60-second 40-yard dash in high school.

Texas football has officially entered its championship-or-bust era

ESPN College Football Analyst Marty Smith summed it up perfectly—this season has the potential to be one of the most electrifying in Texas football history if Arch Manning and company meet expectations. The former five-star recruit, son of Cooper Manning and nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli, flashed his potential last year when filling in for an injured Quinn Ewers.

The hype surrounding Manning is so strong that some insiders have even speculated he could have been the No. 1 pick in this year’s NFL Draft despite his limited playing time. After back-to-back College Football Playoff semifinal appearances, Steve Sarkisian’s squad is expected to take the next step. In ESPN’s way-too-early rankings, Texas is projected as the No. 2 team in the country.

The Longhorns face a tough schedule right out of the gate, opening the season with a road trip to Columbus to take on No. 1-ranked Ohio State. This Week 1 showdown gives Manning an immediate opportunity to prove he’s the real deal. Texas also faces several other tough road tests in 2025, including matchups at Florida and Georgia. While the path back to the College Football Playoff won’t be easy, expectations remain sky-high.

It’s an exciting time to be a Longhorns fan. Texas is bringing in the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class to support its star quarterback, and the addition of Luke Dunham as a preferred walk-on provides more depth at the position. With Manning likely heading to the NFL after this season, Dunham could have a shot at becoming the hometown team’s future starter.
