Tennessee basketball could potentially welcome back a beloved player, as guard Zakai Zeigler has taken legal action against the NCAA to pursue a fifth year of eligibility and return for the 2025–26 season.

According to a press release, Zeigler is challenging the NCAA’s current rule limiting athletes to four seasons of competition within a five-year window, calling it an “unlawful restraint of trade” under both federal and state antitrust laws.

In his senior campaign, Zeigler delivered career-high numbers, averaging 13.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. He shot 40.4% from the field and 32.2% from beyond the arc, while also setting a new SEC record with 747 career assists.

His return would be a significant boost for the Vols, given his deep experience in head coach Rick Barnes’ system. Zeigler, a two-time SEC Player of the Year, has been an integral part of Tennessee’s success on both ends of the floor and a respected leader in the locker room.

Zeigler and Barnes have forged a strong bond over the years, with Zeigler embracing Barnes’ demanding coaching style while also developing a close relationship off the court. He has fully bought into the Vols’ culture and vision.

He’s now the second Tennessee player, alongside Jordan Gainey, seeking a fifth year of eligibility. Coach Barnes has indicated that the team is holding off on filling its final roster spot—potentially leaving room for a return by Zeigler or Gainey.

The NCAA is currently considering changes that would expand eligibility to five full seasons for all athletes. If that rule is adopted, programs would also be granted an additional scholarship, which would make it easier for Tennessee to retain both Zeigler and Gainey without affecting roster limits.
