It’s uncommon for a significant contract dispute in major sports to go without commentary from Stephen A. Smith. Thus, it came as no surprise when he shared his thoughts on Dak Prescott’s ongoing contract negotiations—or lack thereof—with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.

Prescott, set to become a free agent next spring, appears to be waiting for other prominent quarterbacks in the league to sign their contracts first, aiming to maximize his earnings, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on SportsCenter on Sunday, according to Bleacher Report.

While Cowboys fans might believe their veteran quarterback is worth a hefty contract, Smith disagrees, citing Prescott’s playoff performance over the years.

“I’m just saying he doesn’t deserve it,” Smith remarked on ESPN First Take on Monday.

“I understand we talk about the market, and your value is what the market dictates… He doesn’t deserve it because he doesn’t show up in the postseason.”

Since 2017, Prescott, who will turn 31 on July 29, has won two out of seven playoff games, as per StatMuse. During this period, he has maintained a 64.5% completion percentage and a 14-7 TD-INT ratio, with the Cowboys never advancing past the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

“If you’re a Dallas Cowboys fan, are you excited about retaining Dak Prescott?” Smith questioned.

Smith’s comments come amidst reports from Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News indicating that the Cowboys are prioritizing contract extension talks with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who is set to become a free agent in 2025.

The Cowboys will report to training camp on Wednesday, July 24. Their first preseason game is scheduled for August 11 against the Rams in Los Angeles.
