ST. LOUIS — Mets left fielder underwent an MRI on Sunday after exiting the first game of New York’s doubleheader against the Cardinals due to discomfort in his right side.
Manager Carlos Mendoza explained that He suffered the injury while making a throw during the third inning of the Mets’ 6–5 loss.
“He felt it in the oblique area on a throw to home plate,” Mendoza said. “We’ll evaluate and see what we’re dealing with.”
Mendoza noted that any issue involving the oblique is concerning.
“Those injuries can be tricky,” he added. “I don’t want to jump to conclusions.”
The 31-year-old was making his first start in left field this season, having only played two innings there previously while mostly serving as the designated hitter.
The injury occurred during a play in the third when the Cardinals had the bases loaded with one out. Winker caught a fly ball from Nolan Gorman and threw home, trying to get Brendan Donovan, who scored safely. Nolan Arenado was later tagged out in a rundown.

Following Winker’s exit, Jeff McNeil shifted from second base to left field. Luisangel Acuña moved from third to second, and Mark Vientos came in to play third and take Winker’s spot in the batting order.
Winker walked and hit a sacrifice fly in his two plate appearances. He is batting .239 with one home run and 10 RBIs across 24 games this season.
