The Boston Red Sox shared an update on Wilyer Abreu on Saturday.

Abreu arrived at camp feeling unwell due to a gastrointestinal illness. Lab tests confirmed the issue, and while the Gold Glove outfielder was not in peak condition, his results have been improving.

“Wilyer came to camp with a gastrointestinal illness,” a Red Sox spokesperson said, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “It’s viral, and he wasn’t feeling well with some abnormal labs.

The results have been improving, and he’s feeling better, but we’re waiting for them to return to normal before he resumes baseball activities.”

Since falling ill, Abreu has refrained from swinging a bat or participating in fielding drills. He returned to the Fenway South complex early last week and appeared on NESN’s 310 To Left podcast with Tom Caron and Lou Merloni, which suggests positive progress in his recovery. However, the Red Sox plan to be cautious with the 25-year-old.

“The lab results came in on Friday,” manager Alex Cora told reporters, per Cotillo. “There’s still something there. He’ll have another test on Monday, and we’ll evaluate from there. Until we get clearance from the doctors, he won’t participate.”

With Opening Day set for March 27, Abreu still has time to regain his form. His diagnosis came shortly after Cora also announced a setback for pitcher Kutter Crawford.
