Seattle Seahawks To Confirm Another Departure Ahead Of 2024 NFL Trade Deadline

As the NFL trade deadline on November 5, 2024, approaches, the Seattle Seahawks face a choice about whether to make additional moves to strengthen their roster. Seattle Sports’ Mike Salk has suggested that one of the team’s key players might be worth trading.

Salk is advocating for the Seahawks to consider trading fan favorite, proposing a deal that could bring in future first- and third-round draft picks. It’s uncertain if He would yield this kind of return in a potential trade.

A poll posted on X shows that fans are somewhat divided on the issue, with about 60% supporting the idea of trading Him, while nearly 40% are opposed. He is due to become a free agent after the 2025 season, and Salk argues that his salary could be better invested in addressing other roster needs.

Here’s what you should know about a potential trade involving Metcalf.

Seahawks Star DK Metcalf Is Slated to Have a $31.8 Million Cap Hit in 2024

Metcalf inked a three-year, $72 million deal with the Seahawks, with his cap hit set to rise from $15 million in 2024 to $31.8 million in 2025.

“If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ve likely heard me bring up this concept,” Salk wrote in an October 16 piece titled, “Salk: Why Seahawks should explore a DK Metcalf trade.” “You might assume I have something against him (I don’t) or that I doubt his skills as a receiver (I think he’s very talented). What I do believe, however, is that he occupies a position that can become extremely costly, and allocating big money there isn’t the wisest investment given what he’ll seek in his next contract.

“Currently, DK is in the second year of a three-year extension averaging $24 million annually. That ranks him 13th among receivers, but each of the 12 players above him has a deal extending beyond DK’s contract,” Salk added.

“This sets him up for a new contract that could boost his pay by $6-10 million per year, potentially making him the team’s highest-paid player. No thanks.”

Why the Seahawks Should Not Consider Trading DK Metcalf

Seattle has several roster gaps, including a questionable offensive line and a defense that head coach Mike Macdonald is working to shape in his own style. The Seahawks do have other playmakers, such as Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Tyler Lockett.

Still, the impact Metcalf brings to the field is clear. A recent example was in Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons, when Metcalf scored a touchdown just before halftime, catching the ball despite being surrounded by three defenders.

However, without Metcalf in the lineup against the Buffalo Bills in Week 8, Seattle’s offense faltered, managing only one touchdown in a 31-10 blowout loss. As Metcalf approaches a contract extension, there are crucial discussions to be had regarding his next deal.

It’s difficult to imagine the Seahawks not feeling some regret if they choose to part ways with Metcalf.
