Seattle Seahawks’ Abe Lucas Replacement Revealed

The college football season is roughly halfway through, and as usual, there’s no shortage of way-too-early mock drafts circulating. While it might seem premature to dive into mock drafts in October when the NFL season is just a quarter completed and no draft order is set, it can still be a fun and informative exercise.

It allows us to get a sense of where the Seattle Seahawks might currently stand in terms of draft positioning and which positions they could be targeting in 2025. This analysis will focus on four mock drafts published within the last week, each of which has the Seahawks picking 14th overall. Although this could change as the season progresses, for now, it positions Seattle in the middle of the first round, outside of the playoff spots.

Starting with CBS Sports, Josh Edwards projects Seattle to select edge rusher Abdul Carter from Penn State. Edwards emphasizes that Seattle’s defense needs more pressure across the field, and Carter would provide stability at a position that has been lacking for years.

Next, Fox Sports’ Rob Rang, who covers the Seahawks extensively, has Seattle taking LSU offensive tackle Emery Jones Jr. Rang highlights the team’s struggles at right tackle, citing it as a key reason for their three-game losing streak, and suggests Jones could be the solution.

In ESPN’s mock draft, Jordan Reid envisions the Seahawks trading back to pick 20 and selecting another offensive tackle, Cameron Williams from Texas. Like Rang, Reid emphasizes the poor play at right tackle, compounded by injury concerns surrounding Abe Lucas. Adding Williams would solidify the line alongside Charles Cross, giving the Seahawks a pair of young tackles to build around.

Finally, The Draft Network’s Keith Sanchez has Seattle taking Georgia safety Malachi Starks. Sanchez believes Starks has the potential to help Seattle recapture the dominance of the Legion of Boom era, thanks to his versatility in playing both free and strong safety.

In summary, these mock drafts highlight three key positions of need: right tackle (Jones and Williams), edge rusher (Carter), and safety (Starks).

Carter has been impressive this season for Penn State, recording 27 tackles, 4 sacks, 3 passes defensed, and a forced fumble in six games. At 6’3″ and 259 pounds, he could be a day-one contributor for Seattle’s defense, particularly if the team moves on from veterans like Uchenna Nwosu or Dre’Mont Jones.

Malachi Starks has also had a solid start for Georgia, with 32 tackles and an interception through six games. Though his numbers aren’t flashy, Starks’ ability to play multiple positions in the secondary would be a valuable asset for a Seahawks safety unit that has already been tested by injuries this season.

As for offensive tackles, both Emery Jones and Cameron Williams bring intriguing potential to shore up Seattle’s right tackle position. Jones has solidified himself as a reliable pass protector, while Williams’ superior run and pass-blocking grades make him a rising star. With Abe Lucas’ future uncertain due to injury and backup George Fant on injured reserve, either player could be a long-term solution at the position.

While looking at mock drafts this early might seem premature, it provides a glimpse into how the Seahawks could address key areas of need. As the NFL season progresses, these projections may shift, but for now, right tackle, edge rusher, and safety appear to be the most significant positions to watch for Seattle in 2025.
