San Francisco Giants legend Buster Posey has taken a more active role in the team’s organizational matters, reportedly at the expense of team president Farhan Zaidi.
According to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, Posey intervened in contract negotiations with third baseman Matt Chapman in early September.
Frustrated by the lack of progress between Zaidi and Chapman, Posey, who chairs the Giants’ executive board, stepped in to personally handle the talks. One key sticking point had been Chapman’s request for a no-trade clause, which Zaidi was hesitant to agree to. Posey overruled Zaidi, securing the clause for Chapman.

The report casts Zaidi in an unfavorable light, implying that the Giants’ ownership lacked confidence in him to finalize a deal with Chapman.
While Chapman signed with the team in March, he had the option to opt out and test free agency this winter. Posey’s involvement also sidelined Chapman’s agent, Scott Boras, known for steering his players toward free agency rather than re-signing early.
Posey’s growing influence within the Giants may create tension with Zaidi, but it’s clear why the team prioritized Chapman, who is batting .247 with 24 home runs and continues to provide excellent defense at third base.
