REPORT: San Francisco Giants To Land Los Angeles Dodgers’ $115 Million Ace As Blake Snell Replacement

The San Francisco Giants entered the offseason with a significant gap in their starting rotation following Blake Snell’s decision to opt out and test free agency. Now that Snell has secured a five-year, $182 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the focus shifts to what president of baseball operations Buster Posey might do next.

Snell’s move to the Dodgers also raises questions for Los Angeles, as two key postseason contributors, Walker Buehler and Jack Flaherty, are unlikely to return in 2025. Could the Giants pivot to Flaherty and offer him a lucrative contract?

After a challenging 2023 season, where he posted a 4.99 ERA, Flaherty signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Detroit Tigers to reestablish his value. He delivered a strong rebound performance, finishing 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and 194 strikeouts over 162 innings. Flaherty was also a reliable arm for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts during their World Series-winning postseason run.

ESPN’s Dave Schoenfield predicts that the Giants could target Flaherty, potentially signing him to a five-year, $115 million deal.

“We don’t yet know exactly how Posey will approach his role as an executive,” Schoenfield wrote. “But given his experience winning World Series titles with starters like Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain, and Tim Lincecum leading the rotation, it’s likely he values pitching depth highly. The Giants ranked just 18th in the majors in rotation ERA—despite playing in a pitcher-friendly park—and will need to replace Snell if he departs. Flaherty, coming off a resurgent season, seems like a logical fit.”
