The Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens might sign 27-sack free-agent edge rusher Carl Lawson this summer. According to reports, Lawson is working out for the Panthers this week as the team evaluates several free agents during training camp. Lawson, who spent his first four seasons with the Bengals, has accumulated 20 sacks and 81 tackles in his career. However, his production has decreased since joining the Jets in 2021 due to health issues.
In addition to Lawson, the Panthers are also auditioning Yannick Ngakoue to see who fits better in their defensive system. It’s notable that Carolina is considering adding edge rushers despite already signing Jadeveon Clowney. Lawson, at 28 years old, remains one of the most underrated free agents and could be a cost-effective option on a one-year deal if the Panthers choose him over Ngakoue.
Given that the Panthers already have Clowney and Shaq Thompson as their primary edge rushers, opting for Lawson might be more economical compared to Ngakoue, who is likely seeking a starting role. Meanwhile, the Ravens are still in need of edge-rushing support with Clowney no longer part of their top-tier defense. With Kyle Van Noy and Justin Madubuike returning, a cost-effective option like Lawson would be beneficial for Baltimore.
Considering Baltimore’s limited cap space, Lawson could enhance his performance with the Ravens.
