REPORT: Philadelphia Phillies To Bolster Pitching Staff With No-Doubt Hall Of Fame Candidate

The Philadelphia Phillies boast one of the league’s top rotations, but after how the 2024 season ended, a little extra help wouldn’t hurt.

This offseason, the rotation isn’t expected to see major changes, aside from Spencer Turnbull entering free agency for the first time in his career.

To replace Turnbull, the Phillies could make a bold move by signing a surefire Hall of Famer.

Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter suggested a potential target: “The Atlanta Braves took a chance on an aging Chris Sale last offseason, and he surprised everyone by winning National League Cy Young honors as their No. 5 starter. The Phillies might follow suit with Max Scherzer, offering him a one-year deal to pitch for a World Series contender in the twilight of his Hall of Fame career.”

Scherzer’s career numbers speak volumes: a 215-111 record, 3.16 ERA, 3,391-to-752 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .220 opponent batting average, and a 1.08 WHIP over 17 seasons.

Despite recent injuries, Scherzer is ready to compete again. Spotrac estimates his cost at $15.3 million—a bargain for a three-time Cy Young winner and future Hall of Famer.

Set to turn 41 next July, Scherzer brings an unmatched pedigree. He would not only add veteran leadership and postseason experience but also allow the Phillies to remain flexible with a short-term contract.

As a two-time World Series champion, Scherzer knows what it takes in October. With the Phillies still chasing their elusive third title, securing him before another team does could be the move that finally puts them over the top.
