REPORT: Philadelphia Phillies are one big step away from landing the ideal clubhouse fit in Houston Astros All-Star third baseman

Juan Soto continues to grab headlines, but He might be the most intriguing free agent this offseason. The two-time World Series champion has spent all nine seasons of his career with the Houston Astros, but the All-Star third baseman is expected to draw significant interest in free agency, potentially leading him to a new team.

One potential landing spot is the Philadelphia Phillies, who are searching for more stability in their star-studded offense. While the Phillies boast impressive power, their inconsistency at the plate was glaring during their playoff struggles. Despite their roster of big names, they could greatly benefit from a steady, disciplined hitter like Him in the heart of the lineup.

However, there’s a catch. He is a natural third baseman, and the Phillies already have an All-Star at the position in Alec Bohm. While Bohm gained momentum late in the season and is too valuable to bench, he’s not a great fit for other positions—especially with Bryce Harper now entrenched at first base.

This means that if the Phillies were to pursue Bregman, they might need to trade Bohm first. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, this scenario remains a distinct possibility.

Phillies expected to make ‘strong play’ for Alex Bregman if Alec Bohm gets dealt

“If the Phillies trade Alec Bohm, they are reportedly expected to pursue Alex Bregman aggressively. Bregman’s skills and personality seem like a natural fit for the team, or they might consider signing Willy Adames and shifting him to third base,” reports Nightengale.

Houston Astros, Free Agent Alex Bregman Reportedly Far Apart in Negotiations

This news will excite Phillies fans. Both Bregman and Adames would be strong additions, but Bregman’s exceptional contact hitting and extensive postseason experience make him the preferred option. His next contract could approach $200 million, but John Middleton has shown a willingness to spend to keep the Phillies competitive. The team knows Bregman’s value firsthand after facing him in the World Series.

Although 2023 wasn’t Bregman’s finest season, the 30-year-old still posted a 4.1 WAR, hitting .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs. He remains an elite defender at third base, something the Phillies lack. While Bryce Harper delivered Gold Glove-worthy defense at first base, the team as a whole hasn’t been known for its defensive prowess.

Trading Bohm shouldn’t be too difficult. At 27, he offers a few years of affordable team control and has an All-Star selection on his résumé. Despite postseason struggles, Bohm’s impressive first half and consistent improvement each season make him an attractive trade piece.

Several teams would likely show interest in Bohm. If the Phillies are determined to land Bregman, competition is expected, but it’s within Dave Dombrowski’s reach. For the two-time All-Star chasing a third World Series title, Philadelphia seems like an ideal destination.
