REPORT: New York Mets To Land Yankees’ Stolen Base Leader To Provide Infield Versatility

Last Friday, the New York Yankees released infielder, whom they had acquired from the Miami Marlins last spring. The 34-year-old was projected to earn around $3.8 million in arbitration this winter. Unfortunately, he was limited to just 25 games last season due to injuries.

Although His value for 2024 might be limited, he remains a highly versatile bench player, praised for his defensive reliability and exceptional base-running abilities. In 2022, he led Major League Baseball with 41 stolen bases. Throughout his career, He has demonstrated his versatility by playing nearly every position, with a primary focus on third base, shortstop, and second base.

Speed, Skill, And Versatility: Jon Berti’s Infield Potential

Berti’s importance to the Yankees became evident in the postseason, despite his minimal role during the regular season. When first baseman Anthony Rizzo fractured two fingers in the second-to-last game of the regular season, New York was left with limited options at first base.

 

 

Nonetheless, Berti smoothly filled the position for three games in the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals, demonstrating outstanding defensive skills despite lacking previous experience at first base.

Another team that could benefit from Berti’s skills is the New York Mets, who are among the slowest teams in the league and are looking to add infield depth this offseason. With Jose Iglesias unlikely to return as the starting second baseman, Jeff McNeil is set to take over the position. However, McNeil has struggled offensively since his outstanding 2022 season and isn’t known for his defensive prowess. This creates a gap at second base in the Mets’ otherwise strong infield, making it a logical move to bring in a versatile depth player like Berti, who excels defensively and is a threat on the bases.

Chicago White Sox

On the other hand, teams like the Chicago White Sox are focusing on rebuilding and could greatly benefit from having a versatile veteran on their roster. Out of the eight infielders currently on Chicago’s active roster, only three are over the age of 25. The White Sox should look to add players who can assist in developing their young talent while also offering solid performance on the field, and Berti could fulfill both roles.

Market Value & Projection

No matter where Berti ultimately signs, it’s unlikely he’ll secure a contract longer than a few years. The most probable outcome is a one-year “bridge” deal. Spotrac forecasts his next contract to be around $4.3 million, which is an increase from the $3.6 million he made in 2024. While some teams may consider this too much for a depth or platoon player, given the limited options in this year’s infield market, Berti could see both a salary boost and an expanded role in the upcoming season.
