The New York Mets have added Juan Soto, but what’s their next move?

They still need to find a corner infielder to replace Pete Alonso at first base. While options at first base are limited, the Mets could opt to add a third baseman and shift Mark Vientos to first.

One of the top available players is St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, who recently included the Mets on the list of teams he would consider waiving his no-trade clause for.

Thomas Gauvain of Redbird Rants proposed a trade that would bring Arenado to New York in a major deal.

Nolan Arenado open to switch from third base to first and leaving Cardinals for a team he approves

Here’s the proposed trade:

Mets receive: 3B Nolan Arenado, $15 million
Cardinals receive: RHP Jonah Tong

According to Gauvain, “The Mets have already landed this offseason’s biggest acquisition in Juan Soto, strengthened their rotation, and might not be finished. Brett Baty is currently slated as the Mets’ third baseman for 2025, but after a tough 2024 season at the plate and underwhelming defense, Arenado would be a major upgrade at third base. With Arenado, the Mets would have one of the strongest left sides of the infield in baseball, pairing his elite defense with Francisco Lindor at shortstop. If the Mets are unable to re-sign Alonso, they could explore the trade market to fill their corner infield spots.”

The Cardinals stand to benefit from this trade by shedding over $30 million of Arenado’s remaining $52 million contract while adding Jonah Tong, a promising prospect with a strong fastball.

This move would help the Mets build a World Series-caliber team without breaking the bank, especially with the Cardinals contributing cash in the deal. It would also free up funds for the Mets to strengthen their starting rotation.
