San Diego Padres closer Tanner Scott is poised to be one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason, standing out as the top option in a thin relief pitcher market.
Notably, Scott is the only left-handed reliever among the top arms available, and he’s projected to command a $54 million contract, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. However, there’s potential for him to earn even more.
FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray recently highlighted Scott’s robust free-agent market, linking him to several big-market teams, including the New York Mets. “Free-agent reliever Tanner Scott’s market is extensive, and includes many big market teams such as the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and others,” Murray reported.
The idea of the Mets aggressively pursuing Scott is intriguing. On one hand, Mets owner Steve Cohen has the resources to pay top dollar, and Scott’s status as the best free-agent reliever makes him a logical target.
However, the Mets already have a star closer in Edwin Díaz, who missed the entire 2023 season due to injury but has shown flashes of his elite form despite some struggles in 2024.
Adding Scott to the bullpen could provide a dynamic one-two punch. Similar to the role he played with the Padres after being acquired last season, Scott could specialize in late-game matchups against left-handed hitters, while Díaz handles right-handed batters. Such a pairing would give the Mets a versatile and formidable closing duo.
