REPORT: New York Mets Blockbuster Deal Lands Chicago Cubs’ $80 Million Star As Pete Alonso’s Replacement

While the New York Mets are pursuing Juan Soto in free agency, president of baseball operations David Stearns also has other roster concerns to address, notably at first base with Pete Alonso entering free agency. If Alonso doesn’t return to the Mets, what options do they have?

Several alternatives are available, including free agents like Christian Walker and Paul Goldschmidt. The Mets could also consider moving Mark Vientos to first base and signing players like Alex Bregman or Willy Adames to play third.

The trade market presents another opportunity, with Chicago Cubs outfielder/first baseman being a key target. Bellinger signed a three-year, $80 million extension with the Cubs in February and chose not to opt out this winter.

Though he wants to remain in Chicago, the Cubs may have different plans. The Mets are considered the “clear favorite” for Soto, but acquiring both Soto and Alonso might not be feasible.

If the Mets need a new first baseman, FanSided’s Joshua Ambroise suggests Bellinger could be an ideal fit. The 2019 NL MVP posted a solid .266/.325/.426 line with 18 home runs, 23 doubles, 78 RBI, and 72 runs in 2024.

While his power would be less than Alonso’s, Bellinger would still be a reliable offensive contributor and brings strong defense. He also has experience playing in high-pressure markets, having spent six seasons with the Dodgers, where he earned NL Rookie of the Year, NLCS MVP, NL MVP, and a World Series title. Ambroise believes Bellinger’s experience would make him well-suited for New York’s spotlight.
