The St. Louis Cardinals are actively looking to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado and the $52 million remaining on his contract. They’re so eager to move him that they’re reportedly willing to cover a significant portion of his salary to facilitate a deal.
Complicating matters is Arenado’s no-trade clause. However, one team he’s rumored to be open to waiving it for is the Los Angeles Dodgers.
If the Dodgers can land Arenado without taking on most of his contract, it would be a clear win for them. Here’s a potential trade scenario that could make it happen:
Trade Proposal:
- Los Angeles Dodgers receive: 3B Nolan Arenado, $25 million
- St. Louis Cardinals receive: RHP Bobby Miller
This straightforward deal benefits both sides. The Dodgers would acquire a multi-time Platinum Glove winner to bolster their lineup at third base, filling a key need. Arenado would slot in as a middle-to-lower-order bat in Dave Roberts’ star-studded lineup. Meanwhile, the Cardinals would send $25 million to cover roughly half of Arenado’s contract.

In return, St. Louis would gain promising pitching prospect Bobby Miller. Miller debuted in 2023, impressing with a 2.0+ WAR and a blazing fastball that hit 100 MPH. However, he struggled mightily in 2024, with a -1.9 WAR, an 8.52 ERA, and a 1.77 WHIP.
Miller’s struggles make him a high-risk, high-reward addition for the Cardinals, but moving half of Arenado’s contract makes the gamble worthwhile. For Miller, a change of scenery could be the key to unlocking his potential, as opportunities in the Dodgers’ crowded rotation appear limited.
