In the 2024-2025 season, despite another disappointing year for the Habs, fans still have reasons to be excited about the emerging young talent. Players like Lane Hutson, Logan Mailloux, and Joshua Roy might get the chance to play a full 82-game season in Montreal. Kirby Dach, although slightly older and injured in last year’s Game 2, also has potential to contribute significantly.
If Hutson gets time on the power play and plays the entire season, he could potentially finish as the NHL’s top rookie defenseman scorer. Simon Boisvert mentioned this on BPM Sports, and given his objective and patient approach, his optimism about Hutson’s future is encouraging. However, Boisvert advises patience, preferring to see Hutson gain more experience in the NHL or AHL before making bold predictions.

Competing for the top rookie defenseman scorer won’t be easy. Talented first-year defensemen like Artyom Levshunov, Denton Mateychuk, and Brandt Clarke, along with a standout performer like Brock Faber from 2023-2024, will be formidable opponents. Although Hutson’s chances of winning the Calder Trophy are slim, he could still end his first professional season as the top defenseman of his age group.
Fans hope Hutson will get plenty of power play time, even with Mike Matheson on the roster, unless Matheson is traded before then.
