The Houston Astros are actively searching for a corner infielder this offseason, with needs at both third and first base.
Recently, they acquired All-Star corner infielder Isaac Paredes, who has the versatility to play either position.
While a reunion with Alex Bregman remains the ideal scenario, it seems unlikely. The Astros also attempted to trade for Cardinals infielder Nolan Arenado, but the deal was blocked by Arenado’s no-trade clause.
Cody Williams of FanSided speculates that Houston might target veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt as a dark horse option. He notes that Paredes’ versatility, following the Kyle Tucker trade, gives the Astros flexibility to focus on signing a first baseman rather than another third baseman.

Williams adds that Houston’s willingness to explore an Arenado trade indicates they’re open to betting on experienced players, but only at a reasonable cost. While higher-upside options like Pete Alonso or Christian Walker could be more appealing, Goldschmidt might better align with the team’s budget.
As a fallback option, Goldschmidt could provide solid value, offering more production than Houston has had at first base in recent years. However, prioritizing a reunion with Bregman or pursuing Alonso or Walker would likely be more impactful.
