The Astros made a significant move on Friday by trading Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs for Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski, and Cam Smith.
This deal may pave the way for Houston to pursue a star infielder, as they’ve emerged as “serious suitors” for Nolan Arenado, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. While no agreement appears “imminent,” discussions between the Cardinals and Astros have reportedly intensified since the MLB winter meetings.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have also been linked to a potential blockbuster deal for Arenado. The All-Star third baseman, who holds a no-trade clause, is said to be open to waiving it to join Boston.

If the Astros manage to land Arenado, it would likely rule out the possibility of a reunion with Alex Bregman, who has also been on the Red Sox’s radar. Despite this, Houston’s general manager Dana Brown stated after the Tucker trade that negotiations with Bregman remain unchanged. The Astros have reportedly offered the All-Star infielder a six-year, $156 million deal.
Ultimately, the future of the infield market may hinge on where the Cardinals decide to send Arenado.
