There has been significant speculation about the Montreal Canadiens trading for Rutger McGroarty, the 14th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. McGroarty, an American center who captained the 2024 World Juniors gold medal-winning team, has spent the last two seasons at the University of Michigan. He has expressed a desire not to play for the Winnipeg Jets, suggesting the possibility of a trade to benefit the Jets.

Rutger McGroarty Getting Greedy, Teams Walking from Trade Talks

This situation isn’t unique, as players have previously forced trades before signing contracts. Adam Fox compelled the Carolina Hurricanes to trade him to the New York Rangers, and Eric Lindros similarly forced a trade from the Quebec Nordiques to the Philadelphia Flyers. In the Lindros trade, the Nordiques received a substantial return, including players like Steve Duchesne, Peter Forsberg, and Ron Hextall, among others, plus draft picks and cash. This trade laid the foundation for the Colorado Avalanche’s two Stanley Cups after the franchise relocated to Denver.

Given Fox’s success, including a Norris Trophy, it’s reasonable that Winnipeg would demand a high price for McGroarty. However, Fox’s adamant stance and the end of his NCAA eligibility reduced his trade value, resulting in Carolina receiving just a second-round pick and a conditional third-round pick. The comparison to Lindros shows the significant difference in trade value over time.

One proposed trade between the Canadiens and the Jets involved Montreal offering the Calgary Flames’ conditional first-round pick in 2025 and a couple of prospects. While this might seem like a substantial offer, McGroarty is the key piece, and Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff might have felt the deal lacked certainty.

Montreal fans might be disappointed that the trade didn’t materialize, but they should remain hopeful. With two years left before McGroarty’s signing rights expire, pressure will increase on Cheveldayoff and the Jets. The Jets’ GM is likely seeking a top prospect rather than multiple assets, possibly starting discussions with names like David Reinbacher.

Although Montreal hasn’t made significant moves in free agency this summer, GM Kent Hughes has been patient in his rebuild, avoiding rushed deals and bad contracts. He can afford to wait regarding McGroarty, with valuable assets in hand and the luxury of time. Hughes has shown strategic patience and holds a strong position in these negotiations.
