The St. Louis Cardinals remain one of the more intriguing teams in Major League Baseball. While they boast a talented roster, they’ve consistently come up short in recent seasons.

This year has followed a familiar pattern, with the team once again getting off to a sluggish start. As a result, there’s growing speculation that the Cardinals could be quite active ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

They have several players who could draw interest from other teams, but it’s still unclear if the front office will opt to make any major moves. One player to keep an eye on is reliever.

Ryan Helsley sets new Cardinals record with 49th single-season save

Helsley has recently been identified as a strong candidate to be traded. Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report included him in his list of top 10 players most likely to be moved before the deadline.

“Helsley is in the final year of his contract, and unless an extension is worked out, the Cardinals might look to deal him,” Kelly noted. “Much will depend on the team’s position in the standings. Last season, Helsley captured the Trevor Hoffman Award as the National League’s best reliever, finishing with a 2.04 ERA and leading the majors with 49 saves.

With the high demand for elite bullpen arms at the deadline, the Cardinals could potentially land a pair of top-10 prospects in return.”

So far in 2025, Helsley has continued to pitch well, recording a 2.57 ERA in seven appearances. If he maintains that form, St. Louis may consider dealing him if they don’t find themselves in playoff contention. With so many teams prioritizing pitching upgrades in July, the Cardinals could capitalize on the market and maximize Helsley’s value.
