REPORT: Cincinnati Reds Kicked The Tires On Cleveland Guardians’ Josh Naylor, Lane Thomas

The Cincinnati Reds have reportedly shown interest in Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas in trade discussions with the Cleveland Guardians, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer. While the Guardians are open to offers for both players, there’s no indication that a deal with the Reds or any other team is imminent. Wittenmyer’s use of the phrase “kicked the tires” suggests that the Reds’ inquiry may have been more exploratory than a serious pursuit.

The Reds are actively seeking outfield help, with president of baseball operations Nick Krall stating that any new offensive additions would “most likely” be outfielders. Thomas, a right-handed hitter, could complement left-handed hitters Jake Fraley and TJ Friedl in right or center field. However, his projected $8.3 million arbitration salary might be considered steep for a potential part-time role, especially given the Reds’ limited budget.

MLB rumors: Guardians listening to trade offers on Josh Naylor, Lane Thomas

Thomas produced a .253/.331/.407 slash line in 341 plate appearances with the Nationals last season but struggled after joining the Guardians, hitting .209/.267/.390 in 187 plate appearances. His combined performance resulted in a 99 wRC+, just below league average. Defensively, metrics were critical of his play in right field, though he fared slightly better in center.

The Reds also face challenges in their infield, where options like Jeimer Candelario, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Noelvi Marte are available for corner infield spots and designated hitter. However, none of these players had strong 2024 seasons, with CES missing significant time due to wrist surgery and Marte sidelined in the first half following a PED suspension.

Acquiring Naylor, a proven power hitter, would bring more stability to the infield mix. Coming off a season where he hit .243/.320/.456 with a career-high 31 home runs, Naylor could immediately solidify first base. Since he’s under team control through 2025, the Reds would still have time to develop Marte and Encarnacion-Strand. However, his $12 million projected salary poses a challenge for Cincinnati’s payroll constraints.

Given the circumstances, Cleveland might be more inclined to move Thomas in a salary-clearing trade, while Naylor would likely require a more substantial return. Balancing financial limitations and trade value will be a tricky task for the Reds’ front office.
