The New York Mets made headlines this offseason by signing outfielder Juan Soto to a record-breaking $765 million deal. While David Stearns, the Mets’ president of baseball operations, has added several other players, the team still has a need in center field. Could he pull off a trade for Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox?
Robert had a .657 OPS with 14 home runs in 425 plate appearances during the 2024 season. However, his 2023 campaign showcased his true potential, as he earned All-Star honors and his first Silver Slugger Award. That year, he hit 38 home runs, 36 doubles, drove in 80 runs, scored 90 runs, and stole 20 bases in 595 plate appearances.

Currently, Jose Siri is slated to start in center field for the Mets. Following Soto’s signing, the team has been linked to several outfielders and has reportedly explored trading veteran Starling Marte. What might a potential deal with the White Sox look like to bring Robert to New York?
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer proposed this hypothetical trade:
- Mets receive: OF Luis Robert Jr.
- White Sox receive: INF Ronny Mauricio
“In this regard, the Mets are perhaps the most logical destination for Robert,” Rymer wrote. “Despite the injury issues that have plagued his career, Robert still boasts a .790 OPS and 162-game averages of 31 home runs and 24 stolen bases. He offers significantly more upside than Jose Siri, who is better suited as a fourth outfielder.”
Robert is under contract for $15 million in 2025, the final guaranteed year of his six-year, $50 million deal. His contract also includes $20 million club options for 2026 and 2027, according to Spotrac.
