The Boston Red Sox were initially rumored to be strong contenders in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes. However, those rumors appear to have quieted in recent weeks.
With that in mind, Boston might be exploring alternative plans to ensure a productive offseason.
Cody Williams of FanSided recently speculated that the Red Sox could pursue a blockbuster trade for Minnesota Twins infielder Carlos Correa if they fail to land Bregman.
“Several weeks ago, Minnesota insider Darren Wolfson mentioned hearing that the Red Sox had shown interest in Carlos Correa,” Williams wrote. “The connection makes sense, given Correa’s history with Alex Cora during their time in Houston. Boston could see him as a fit at second base or even shuffle the infield, moving Trevor Story to second and placing Correa at shortstop.
“Additionally, the Twins might be motivated to offload Correa’s contract to reduce their payroll. A trade involving Masataka Yoshida’s contract could make sense, as Yoshida’s deal is costly but less burdensome than Correa’s in terms of total years and dollars.”
A deal involving Correa would only make financial sense for the Red Sox in a swap that offsets some of the cost, such as including Yoshida. While Boston would take on a larger financial burden, they’d acquire a player they highly value. Meanwhile, Minnesota could ease their financial strain by shedding Correa’s contract.
If the Twins are open to trading Correa, a deal like this could work well for both sides.
