The Boston Red Sox may not be finished upgrading their pitching staff, even after completing a high-profile trade for left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet.
Boston’s rotation struggled significantly in the second half of this past season, and Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is working hard this offseason to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself in 2025.
After acquiring Crochet, the Red Sox could assemble a formidable rotation if they manage to secure this offseason’s most coveted pitcher.
“Even after trading for Garrett Crochet earlier this week, the Red Sox still seem like the strongest contender, despite hesitating at the price tags for both Corbin Burnes and Max Fried in recent days,” Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller wrote on Friday, speculating on where free-agent pitcher Corbin Burnes might sign.

Burnes, a former Milwaukee Brewer and Baltimore Oriole, boasts an impressive career record of 60-36, a 3.19 ERA, a 4.1-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .212 opponent batting average, and a 1.06 WHIP over seven MLB seasons.
“Crochet’s projected $2.9 million salary for 2025 hasn’t impacted Boston’s ability to pursue Burnes,” Miller added. “The Red Sox entered the offseason needing multiple starting pitchers, and while they traded prospects for one, they’re poised to spend big for another. Prediction: six years, $218.5 million to the Boston Red Sox.”
The 2021 National League Cy Young winner is testing free agency for the first time and entered the offseason as the most sought-after starting pitcher.
While the Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants are also in the mix for Burnes, the Red Sox, who haven’t made the playoffs since 2021, may be motivated to make another bold move to strengthen their rotation.
