REPORT: Boston Red Sox Fans Received ‘Significant’ Trade Boost For Starting Pitcher, Arguably Even Better Than Crochet And Buehler

The Boston Red Sox might not be finished strengthening their starting rotation.

Last month, they made key moves by trading for Garrett Crochet and signing Walker Buehler. However, the team could still be eyeing a pitcher who might be even better than both Crochet and Buehler.

“I do believe the Red Sox want to make at least one more significant trade,” MLB Network’s Jon Morosi said Thursday. “It could be for (St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan) Arenado, or perhaps an arm like (Miami Marlins pitcher) Sandy Alcántara.”

However, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald quickly shut down any speculation about Alcántara being traded.

“Sandy is not being traded before Opening Day,” Mish wrote on the X platform. “He has been given several assurances of this. Even in light of recent developments. It is not happening.”

While these reports differ, Red Sox fans are understandably excited about the possibility of Alcántara leading a revamped rotation — despite the risks tied to his injury history.

Alcántara, who won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022 after posting a 14-9 record, a 2.28 ERA, a 0.980 WHIP, and a league-leading 8.0 WAR (per Baseball-Reference), regressed in 2023 with a 4.14 ERA and 1.213 WHIP before undergoing Tommy John surgery late in the season. Although he missed all of 2024, he is expected to be ready for the start of the 2025 season.

Now 29, Alcántara has three years remaining on his current contract, including a $21 million club option for 2027. Despite his injury concerns, Alcántara would likely command a significant return in a trade, even if the Marlins were forced to sell at a discount.
