The Boston Red Sox are focused on strengthening their starting rotation this offseason, with a particular emphasis on adding a left-handed starter.

Two prominent lefties, Blake Snell and Yusei Kikuchi, have already been signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels, respectively. This leaves the Red Sox with two top-tier options still available: Atlanta Braves ace Max Fried, a free agent, and Chicago White Sox standout Garrett Crochet. Interestingly, Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito was a high school teammate of Fried’s.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic anticipates the Red Sox making a significant push to acquire Crochet in a blockbuster trade this winter. Bowden notes that the rebuilding White Sox are eager to trade Crochet to gain controllable everyday players who can bolster their offense both immediately and in the long term.

Boston Red Sox Reportedly Turning Attention to Left-Hander Max Fried in Free Agency

Potential trade partners like the Orioles and Dodgers make sense, but Bowden believes the Red Sox are the best fit.

He suggests a trade package centered around Boston’s Gold Glove-winning right fielder Wilyer Abreu, first baseman Triston Casas, and catcher Connor Wong could appeal to both teams. However, it’s unlikely the Red Sox would part with more than one of these established players.

A realistic deal might involve one of those big-league players along with a package of prospects to land Crochet. Such a move could prove beneficial for both organizations.
