The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs have each pulled off major trades this winter. Boston landed left-handed ace Garrett Crochet, while Chicago brought in superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker. However, both teams appear to be far from done.
One prominent target for both clubs is Seattle Mariners pitcher, who is under a $108 million contract through 2028. Despite his hefty deal, Castillo has garnered significant interest from multiple teams.
“As prices for high-end starting pitchers have surged this week, the Mariners have fielded an increasing number of calls about veteran starter Luis Castillo,” reported Ryan Divish and Adam Jude of the Seattle Times.
Both the Red Sox and Cubs are said to have reached out to the Mariners regarding Castillo. While Boston has already secured an ace, the team is still looking to add more and has the assets to make further moves.
“The Boston Red Sox have been persistent in their pursuit of a Mariners starter, even after trading four prospects to the Chicago White Sox for Garrett Crochet on Wednesday,” Divish and Jude wrote. “Earlier this offseason, the Mariners rejected a one-for-one proposal that would have sent one of Seattle’s young starters, Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo, to Boston in exchange for 24-year-old first baseman Triston Casas.”

While Casas could still serve as the centerpiece of a deal, a straight one-for-one swap for Castillo seems unlikely.
Meanwhile, the Cubs remain actively engaged. Chicago could offer second baseman Nico Hoerner, a player the Mariners reportedly hold in high regard.
“The Mariners and Cubs have discussed potential trade alignments this offseason, and Chicago has expressed interest in Castillo,” Divish and Jude wrote.
If a deal materializes, Hoerner would likely be included. The Mariners, in need of infield depth, see him as a strong fit to fill that void.
