This analyst believes that if the SEC decides to expand again, their top potential target would be the Tar Heels.
Discussions about re-alignment in college athletics continue to emerge, with “what if” scenarios starting to unfold for some top-tier conferences.
Currently, the SEC boasts 16 teams, but should they decide to expand, Paul Finebaum suggests that their primary target would be the North Carolina Tar Heels.

“North Carolina is the top choice. Beyond that, it’s uncertain. There are numerous theories. Would North Carolina bring another team with them, or would they go solo?”
All eyes are on the ACC, as speculation grows about several schools seeking exits before the conference’s grant of rights expires in 2036. Florida State and Clemson are the most rumored, but the Tar Heels appear to have various options if they choose to explore them.
Joining the SEC would enhance the UNC football program and offer the basketball team strong regular competition. The possibility of joining the Big Ten is also on the table, as both conferences may compete to recruit North Carolina if they become free agents.
The question remains: would the Tar Heels leave alone, or would another ACC school join them in the move to a new conference?
The potential for further conference re-alignments persists, with a growing belief that multiple ACC schools are looking to move. If the ACC starts to dissolve, the North Carolina Tar Heels will be highly sought after, as their brand is unmatched by other potential candidates.
