“Oakland’s setup man is being traded.”

We’re hearing that the Athletics are about to make their first major trade of the deadline season. Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Kansas City Royals are close to acquiring Oakland setup man Lucas Erceg.

There you go. Yesterday afternoon, we heard that teams were serious about acquiring Erceg from the Athletics, and now, less than 24 hours later, he’s on the move. We’re still waiting for final confirmation on the return package at the time of this writing.

Erceg joined the Athletics before last season in a minor trade with the Brewers. This move has worked out tremendously for the club, as Erceg developed into a hard-throwing reliever who earned setup duties this year. If not for the presence of All-Star Mason Miller, he might have become the closer. Erceg will now join a Royals team aiming to make the playoffs for the first time since 2015. The right-hander posted a 3.68 ERA in 38 games for the Athletics this year.
