The Mets continue to strengthen their pitching depth.

On Wednesday afternoon, the team announced they had claimed right-hander Austin Warren off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. In his six appearances with the Giants, Warren, who spent much of the 2024 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, allowed only two runs in 10 2/3 innings, posting a 1.69 ERA.

Warren was placed on waivers by the Giants last Wednesday to make room for Sam Huff, whom San Francisco claimed from the Texas Rangers. Warren avoided arbitration with the Giants this winter and is set to earn $350,000, according to Jon Becker of FanGraphs. He is under club control through the 2028 season.

At 28 years old, Warren stopped using his change-up last season and instead relied on a three-pitch mix consisting of a slider, sinker, four-seamer, and cutter. Unlike in past years, he focused less on strikeouts in 2024, with his strikeout rate falling from 33.3% in 2023 to 16.7%.

This shift led to more contact pitching, with Warren inducing more ground balls by increasing his sinker usage. In 2023, he threw the sinker just 8.7% of the time, but that figure rose to 27.7% in 2024.

Before his brief stint with the Giants, Warren had made three separate appearances in the majors with the Los Angeles Angels, where he made 38 appearances, giving up 16 runs (15 earned) over 32 innings for a 3.55 ERA and 31 strikeouts.

With Warren’s addition, the Mets now have 38 players on their 40-man roster. They are still seeking a corner infielder, preferably a first baseman, and a utility player.
