The Reds announced (via Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer) that they’ve hired Simon Mathews as their new assistant pitching coach, completing Terry Francona’s inaugural coaching staff in Cincinnati.
Mathews, 29, played college baseball at Georgetown and Temple before spending three seasons in the Angels’ minor league system.
He transitioned to coaching in 2021 and has been with the Reds organization since then, serving as the assistant coordinator of rehabilitation and pitching initiatives for the past two years. This marks his first coaching role at the MLB level.

He’ll join seventh-year pitching coach Derek Johnson’s staff. The role became vacant after former assistant pitching coach Alon Leichman accepted the same position with the Marlins last month.
