The Indianapolis Colts face a crucial offseason, starting with potential changes to their coaching staff. Their playoff hopes were extinguished in Week 17 after a 45-33 loss to the New York Giants. This has sparked conversations about the futures of general manager Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen within the organization.
Ballard, who has been with the team since 2017, has overseen a 61-69 record with only two playoff appearances and no AFC South titles since 2014. Steichen, on the other hand, is in his second year as head coach and may be given more time to shape the roster.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, “The feeling right now is that [Steichen] will return to Indianapolis, but it does seem like changes are coming for the organization. There are questions surrounding general manager Chris Ballard, and we’ll see how that plays out.”

The team’s 2023 No. 4 overall pick, Anthony Richardson, is still developing after injuries have limited him to just 15 games in his first two seasons. Richardson’s slow progress has drawn criticism, but Steichen might be given the opportunity to continue working with the young quarterback as the Colts strive to regain their footing in the competitive AFC.
Shane Steichen hasn’t lost faith in the Colts as a contender
After falling short of expectations under Shane Steichen’s leadership, the 39-year-old Colts head coach remains optimistic about the team’s potential and believes they could contend for the playoffs next season.
“I think we’re really close,” Steichen said, as reported by Joel A. Erickson of the IndyStar. “It’s frustrating to have a season like this, but we’ve got a lot of great guys in the locker room. I’ve said it before, and I know they’ll fight like crazy to finish strong.”
The Colts wrap up their season in Week 18 against the Jacksonville Jaguars before heading into a crucial 2025 offseason.
