The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation for 2025 remains uncertain, with multiple potential outcomes. Either Sam Darnold or J.J. McCarthy is guaranteed to stay, but oddsmakers see Darnold as the more likely departure—especially with growing speculation that Matthew Stafford could land in Minnesota if he leaves the Rams.
According to SportsBettingAG on Feb. 20, the Vikings had the best odds (+300) to acquire Stafford, ahead of the New York Giants (+400) and Las Vegas Raiders (+500).
With the Rams actively exploring trade options, a scenario could emerge where Minnesota places the franchise tag on Darnold and then deals him to Los Angeles as part of a Stafford trade.

Stafford, 37, has two years remaining on his $160 million contract, while Darnold, who had a breakout 2024 season, is projected to command a four-year, $160 million deal in free agency.

While Darnold is younger and coming off a strong campaign, Stafford’s career résumé—including a Super Bowl victory with the Rams in 2021—could make him a more appealing short-term solution for a team like Minnesota.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell was Stafford’s offensive coordinator during that Super Bowl run, making a reunion a logical fit. Bringing in Stafford would give the Vikings an experienced, proven winner for another title push while also giving McCarthy more time to develop as the franchise’s long-term answer at quarterback.
