Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel gave an update on freshman defensive back Boo Carter as he competes for a starting spot ahead of the 2024 college football season.

The Volunteers face some defensive uncertainties this season, especially in the secondary, after Jourdan Thomas suffered a season-ending injury during fall camp, leaving an opening in the starting lineup. True freshman Boo Carter is among those vying for the position, and Coach Heupel addressed his progress during a media session on Thursday.
“The most significant area of growth is his ability to play within the system,” Heupel said. “His physical abilities will naturally take over from there.”
Defensive backs coach Willie Martinez also commented on the competition earlier in the week.
“Christian Harrison and Boo Carter are getting the majority of the reps,” Martinez said. “Others like Will Brooks or Andre Turrentine could step in, but right now, Harrison and Carter are the main contenders.”
Thomas’ injury leaves Tennessee in a difficult position. In 2023, Thomas appeared in 12 games, starting once as a sophomore. He recorded 18 tackles, two tackles for loss, and blocked a punt. His absence has forced a reorganization in the secondary, with Carter and Harrison now battling for the starting role.
Harrison has the advantage of experience, entering his third season with 13 games under his belt. Carter, a true freshman and four-star recruit from the 2024 class, being in contention for the job highlights his talent.
Tennessee’s secondary has struggled in recent years under Heupel, and they face a crucial decision ahead of the 2024 season to ensure improvement in this area.
