When looking at the future of the New York Rangers, there are several areas where improvements are needed, particularly on the defensive side. Rumors have surrounded various defensemen on the Rangers’ roster, with almost the entire defensive unit, aside from Adam Fox, being mentioned in trade talks at some point this season.

The team has long sought a reliable partner for Fox, especially given Ryan Lindgren’s struggles with staying healthy.

One potential trade target is Mario Ferraro, a defenseman with the San Jose Sharks. Standing at 6’0″ and weighing 210 lbs, Ferraro could bring much-needed defensive stability to the Rangers. The 26-year-old from Toronto has one more year left on his contract before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

With a cap hit of $3.25 million and the salary cap expected to increase, the Rangers could consider keeping Ferraro if GM Chris Drury and the front office pursue this route.

While the Rangers and Sharks were unable to strike a deal over former Ranger Barclay Goodrow in the summer due to Goodrow’s modified no-trade clause, Ferraro does not have any trade protection, making a potential deal easier to execute.

Despite playing for a struggling Sharks team, Ferraro has managed five goals and six assists for 11 points in 56 games. He fits the type of player Chris Drury is reportedly seeking—someone who can contribute reliably on the back end, especially as a left-shot defenseman who can log significant minutes. Given his affordability and potential, Ferraro could be a valuable addition for many contenders.
