The Cincinnati Reds’ front office undeniably had an impressive offseason. They brought in future Hall of Fame manager Terry Francona and strengthened the roster with key acquisitions like Brady Singer, Gavin Lux, Austin Hays, and Taylor Rogers. While these are significant additions, the Reds shouldn’t consider their 2025 roster complete just yet.

Despite Reds President of Baseball Operations Nick Krall indicating that their offseason moves are likely finished, the team should still explore bringing back one more reliever before officially wrapping up their spending.

After posting a 3.04 ERA across 61 appearances last season, Buck Farmer seemed like a clear candidate to return to Cincinnati. While the bullpen, featuring Alexis Díaz, Sam Moll, Emilio Pagán, and Taylor Rogers, is already strong, Farmer’s presence would add even more versatility to the relief staff.

In 2024, Buck Farmer recorded four or more outs in 19 games, showcasing his versatility as a reliever who can enter at any point—a role many bullpen arms aren’t comfortable with. He finished 21 games but remains ready to pitch whenever needed, a valuable asset the Reds shouldn’t overlook.

Given his overall performance last season and his ability to pitch multiple innings, it’s surprising that he’s still a free agent. Across 61 appearances, he allowed multiple runs in just four games.

Farmer was among the most underrated relievers in MLB last year and has established himself in Cincinnati over the past three seasons as a reliable bullpen piece. His quiet free agency raises some questions—perhaps the Reds are waiting to place Brandon Williamson or Julian Aguiar on the 60-day IL before making a move.

Bringing Farmer back would bolster the Reds’ bullpen, potentially making it one of the strongest in the National League. Given his likely affordable price tag, hopefully, Nick Krall and his staff can find the flexibility to re-sign him.
