The New York Mets’ season ended on a bitter note last year, falling short in the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers after an impressive campaign. Despite their near-miss, the Mets are focused on strengthening their roster for another shot at the World Series next season.

A key priority for the Mets this offseason is re-signing star first baseman Pete Alonso, who is currently a free agent. Although both sides have been in talks for some time, they’ve yet to finalize an agreement due to a significant financial gap, as reported by Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Sherman and Heyman noted that while progress has been made in terms of the structure of a potential three-year deal with at least one opt-out clause, the major financial obstacle remains unresolved.

The Mets have reportedly made it clear to Alonso’s camp that they need a decision soon, in order to allow time to explore other options before spring training.

Alonso, one of the most powerful hitters in MLB, has been a mainstay for the Mets. Last season, he delivered a crucial home run in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card series against the Milwaukee Brewers, helping to send the Mets to the NLDS.

In his six seasons with the Mets, Alonso has hit 226 home runs, and he played all 162 games last season, showcasing his durability alongside his impressive power. Bringing back the four-time All-Star would be a major boost for the Mets as they look to improve next season.
