The New York Mets have dramatically turned their 2024 season around, now sitting three games over .500 (49-46) and holding the final wild-card spot at the All-Star breakāa scenario that seemed impossible at the end of May. Despite their recent success, the bullpen has been a significant weakness due to injuries to key players and underperformance by others.
To address this, President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has already made moves, acquiring Matt Gage and Phil Maton, with Maton having already pitched for the team, and claiming Alex Young off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. However, more reinforcements are needed, and the Mets might look to a familiar trading partner to find a true game-changer for their bullpen.
The Mets could trade for David Robertson

Oh, how things can change in a year. After clinching their first World Series title in franchise history, 2024 has been a rough ride for the Texas Rangers. They currently sit at 46-50, five games behind in the American League West, and 7.5 games out of the final wild-card spot in a tight race.
Given their struggles, the Rangers might consider selling some of their expiring contracts at this year’s trade deadline. While many eyes are on all-star closer Kirby Yates, the team in blue and orange might think about reuniting with David Robertson instead.
Robertson has been outstanding for the Rangers since signing a one-year, $11.5 million deal this past offseason. The 39-year-old has posted a 2.88 ERA, a 0.934 WHIP, and 61 strikeouts over 40.2 innings in 38 appearances, along with recording a save.
Why trading for David Robertson would make sense than trading for Kirby Yates
While Yates might appear to be the flashier choice given his stellar performance this season, it is more logical for the blue and orange to pursue Robertson.
The Alabama native would be significantly cheaper to acquire than Yates and has already proven his comfort pitching at Citi Field, having had a successful first half with the team last season. Additionally, Robertson has a mutual option for next season, offering the Mets some control beyond this year. Time will reveal whether the Mets opt for a major reliever move, but Robertson certainly stands out as a sensible target if they do.
