JUST IN: Understand San Francisco Giants are realistic suitors for $152M New York Mets Slugger following their whiff on Goldschmidt

The San Francisco Giants were reportedly one of the teams seriously considering signing first baseman Paul Goldschmidt this winter. However, on Saturday afternoon, Goldschmidt agreed to a one-year, $12.5 million contract with the New York Yankees.

How will the Giants respond to missing out on Goldschmidt?

FanSided’s Zachary Rotman recently proposed that the Giants could turn their attention to New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso in free agency after losing out on Goldschmidt.

“The Mets are still a possible fit, but why not take advantage of a clearly thin market?” Rotman wrote. “Alonso is likely aiming for a huge deal, but with few realistic suitors, he may not get the massive payday he’s expecting. If the Giants can offer him a deal similar to those given to Blake Snell and Matt Chapman last offseason, Alonso could be a great fit.”

“Adding another power bat would bolster the Giants’ lineup, making them legitimate Wild Card contenders, while also giving Alonso a chance to cash in next offseason (like Snell) or sign a long-term deal with San Francisco (like Chapman).”

Whether or not the Giants pursue Alonso likely depends on the outcome of Corbin Burnes’ free agency. At the moment, the Giants are seen as favorites to sign Burnes, which could price them out of a deal with Alonso.

However, if the Giants miss out on Burnes, they’ll need to allocate their funds elsewhere, and signing a consistent 40-home run hitter would be an excellent way to strengthen the team.
