The Boston Red Sox have had an exciting postseason, but they haven’t quite reaped the rewards they deserve. To strengthen their pitching rotation, they’ve added Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, but they shouldn’t stop there.

Christopher Kline of FanSided recently predicted that the Red Sox could make a major move for San Diego Padres ace Dylan Cease. Although Cease is on an expiring contract, Spotrac expects him to sign a deal worth $108 million in the offseason.

“There’s still room for improvement for the Red Sox, especially with the Yankees making big moves in free agency,” Kline noted. “The AL East is wide open after Juan Soto’s departure, but the Red Sox have the most ground to cover. While the return of Lucas Giolito in 2025 will be a boost, Cease would elevate Boston’s rotation even further.”

“Suddenly, Boston could have two Cy Young contenders leading their rotation—two of the most dominant pitchers in MLB. Both Cease and Crochet can rack up strikeouts, and while Crochet has some durability concerns, Cease is known for being one of the most reliable workhorses in the game.”

If any team is equipped to pull off a trade for Cease, it’s the Red Sox.

With one of the best farm systems in baseball and plenty of tradeable talent at the major league level, Boston has the resources to make it happen. They’ve also been frugal with spending, so signing a player like Anthony Santander or Alex Bregman this winter wouldn’t be a surprise.

Adding Cease would be the perfect finishing touch, and Boston would likely have the financial flexibility to extend him if things go well.
