The Philadelphia Phillies are coming off a stellar 95-67 season, capturing the National League East title for the first time since 2011. However, after an early playoff exit, the team may see significant roster changes. Could these moves pave the way for Houston Astros star Alex Bregman to join the Phillies?
Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies’ president of baseball operations, expressed a willingness to consider all options for improving the team in 2025.
“We have a lot of good players,” Dombrowski told MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki on Oct. 15. “We just need to stay open-minded, explore what’s out there, talk to other teams, and see what unfolds. Sometimes, good players get traded for other good players.”

Third base appears to be a likely area for change. While Alec Bohm drove in a career-high 97 runs and made his first All-Star appearance in 2024, he struggled in the NLDS against the New York Mets, recording a .220 OPS in 14 plate appearances. This has fueled trade rumors, potentially leaving third base open for the Phillies.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer views Philadelphia as a potential destination for Bregman in free agency, alongside the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers.
Swapping Bohm for Bregman would be a clear upgrade for the Phillies as they enter 2025 with lofty goals. A two-time champion, Bregman brings extensive playoff experience, having appeared in 99 postseason games since his debut in 2016.
Acquiring Bregman won’t come cheap. The Athletic’s Tim Britton projects a seven-year, $189 million deal for the 30-year-old, a price the Phillies might be willing to pay to end their World Series drought dating back to 2008.
