Just In: Understand Corbin Burnes dreams aren’t dead as Baltimore Orioles lands $210 Million mega deal

Outside of Juan Soto, Baltimore Orioles ace Corbin Burnes stands out as one of the top players in free agency. Early in the offseason, Burnes’ value was already expected to be significant due to his talent, age, and consistency. Following Blake Snell’s five-year, $182 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Burnes’ market value likely increased further.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Burnes secure a contract exceeding $200 million.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post anticipates Burnes will surpass the $200 million mark, projecting a seven-year, $210 million deal. However, even that figure might be conservative.

Pros and Cons: Should Mets sign Corbin Burnes?

“One of the most consistent and durable starters around,” Heyman wrote. “He didn’t chase strikeouts this year but was just as effective. The Orioles will try to retain him, but it will likely be difficult with teams like the (New York) Yankees, (New York) Mets, and other major-market clubs involved. All the high-revenue AL East teams, plus the (San Francisco) Giants and Dodgers, are expected to pursue the Southern California native. $210 million, 7 years.”

While contract figures are eye-catching, the competition for Burnes is even more intriguing. Heyman points to high-revenue AL East teams, likely including the Yankees, Red Sox, and Blue Jays, along with the Giants and Dodgers. The Dodgers, in particular, emerge as a surprising contender.

Among the listed teams, the Orioles may struggle to meet Heyman’s $210 million projection. The other franchises, including the Dodgers, are well-positioned to offer Burnes a seven-year, $210 million deal.

The Mets should also be considered strong contenders, especially if they fail to land Juan Soto.
