The Baltimore Orioles seem to have missed their opportunity to secure a true ace for their rotation this offseason. Not only did they fail to acquire pitchers like Blake Snell, Max Fried, Garrett Crochet, and Jesús Luzardo through free agency or trades, but they also watched as the Arizona Diamondbacks signed Corbin Burnes—who posted a 2.92 ERA for the O’s in 2024—to a lucrative free agent contract.

The Orioles and Mariners have discussed a Luis Castillo deal

It’s surely been frustrating for Orioles fans to watch top-tier pitching options vanish from the market over the past few weeks. However, there could still be hope if the team plays its cards right.

“Recent discussions have taken place between the Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles about a potential trade for Luis Castillo, according to @jonmorosi,” Kam Brice shared on X.

Castillo comes with a hefty price tag and is on the older side, having just turned 32. He’s set to earn $24.15 million annually for the next three seasons, with a vesting option for 2028 if he throws 180 innings in 2027. Despite this, Castillo could still be a valuable addition to the Orioles’ rotation.

The Orioles could use someone like Castillo

The skilled right-hander threw 175.1 innings in 2024, posting a 3.64 ERA and a 3.91 FIP. His strikeout rate of 24.3 percent fell slightly below his career average of 26.2 percent but wasn’t too far off. While his 2.3 fWAR was a bit underwhelming for a pitcher with such a high price tag, Castillo could still provide value in the right situations.

What does this mean for the Orioles? They might have a chance to land Castillo without giving up much, assuming they can strike a favorable deal. While the Mariners’ asking price remains uncertain, it’s evident that Castillo’s prime is behind him. Could the O’s make a move for the veteran right-hander?
