The San Diego Padres are reportedly considering the possibility of trading some of their star players this winter, particularly those with contracts set to expire. The team’s high-priced roster is starting to create financial challenges for the organization.
One player being considered for trade is ace Dylan Cease, who is expected to secure a $108 million contract in free agency after next season, according to Spotrac.
Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report recently predicted that the Padres could trade Cease to the Baltimore Orioles this winter. Rymer proposed a trade package in which Cease would go to Baltimore in exchange for two promising prospects.
The proposed deal is as follows:
Baltimore Orioles receive: RHP Dylan Cease
San Diego Padres receive: OF Heston Kjerstad, OF Enrique Bradfield Jr. (No. 4 prospect)
Rymer cited Jon Morosi of MLB Network, who mentioned that the Orioles were already interested in Cease before losing Corbin Burnes to the Diamondbacks. With Burnes now officially gone, Baltimore’s need for a top-tier starting pitcher has become even more urgent. Rymer suggests that trading for Cease could be a good move, as Cease had a strong whiff rate this past season, ranking in the 92nd percentile, whereas Burnes has seen a decline in this area. Despite a weaker farm system than in the past, Baltimore still has a surplus of hitters, which makes the deal attractive for San Diego.
Rymer also noted that acquiring Cease would make more sense for Baltimore than trading for Burnes last year. While Burnes is the superior pitcher, Cease would be more affordable for the Orioles to potentially re-sign, making the acquisition a longer-term option rather than just a one-year rental.
