The Cincinnati Reds were previously linked to relief pitcher Carlos Estévez earlier this offseason, with rumors suggesting both the Reds and the Toronto Blue Jays had interest in the former All-Star closer.
However, the Blue Jays recently bolstered their bullpen by signing former Reds pitcher Jeff Hoffman. After two successful seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Hoffman secured a three-year, $33 million deal with Toronto.
Despite some medical concerns that deterred teams like the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles, Hoffman still managed to land a long-term contract.
With Hoffman now heading to Toronto, it opens the door for Cincinnati to focus on negotiations with Estévez. While signing an outfielder remains a higher priority, adding Estévez would provide new Reds manager Terry Francona with a strong 1-2 combination to anchor the bullpen.
Blue Jays-Jeff Hoffman deal could thrust Reds into catbird’s seat for Carlos Estévez
The Reds avoided arbitration with closer Alexis Díaz, agreeing to a one-year, $4.5 million deal for the upcoming season. However, the bullpen is in a precarious state after losing Ian Gibaut, Buck Farmer, and Justin Wilson in free agency, as well as trading Fernando Cruz.

Díaz had an up-and-down 2024 season, and while pitchers like Sam Moll, Emilio Pagán, and Brent Suter are expected to contribute next season, the bullpen is riddled with uncertainties. Tony Santillan, Yosver Zulueta, and Carson Spiers have shown promise but lack consistency against major league hitters.
Graham Ashcraft and Connor Phillips might transition to relief roles in 2025, but that remains speculative. Hard throwers Zach Maxwell and Luis Mey bring heat but struggle with control in critical moments.
While this group has potential, their flaws are evident. Adding an experienced reliever should be a priority for Nick Krall and the Reds’ front office.
Financial limitations complicate the search for a suitable free agent, but if Estévez is a target, the Reds need to act quickly—especially after Hoffman signed with the Blue Jays. With teams like the Angels, Braves, and Cubs rumored to be interested in Estévez, the relief market is heating up. It’s time for the Reds to make their move!
