JUST IN: Seattle Seahawks reportedly land better hands Davante Adams to provide great transitional fit as true Metcalf’s replacement

Davante Adams may be following a similar trajectory to DeAndre Hopkins, gradually aging out of elite wide receiver status. However, the 32-year-old can still be productive. With the New York Jets reportedly moving on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Adams is expected to be released this offseason, making him available to sign with any team in free agency.

A move to the Seattle Seahawks seems unlikely unless they trade DK Metcalf and view Adams as a short-term replacement. That scenario has some logic, as Adams possesses better hands and superior route-running skills compared to Metcalf. However, Metcalf has the advantage in size and speed, making him more of a big-play threat.

While Adams could serve as a transitional piece alongside Jaxon Smith-Njigba if Seattle drafts Metcalf’s eventual replacement in 2025, that situation has yet to unfold. For now, Metcalf remains a Seahawk and is expected to stay with the team.

Seattle Seahawks could find themselves facing Davante Adams twice in 2025

Davante Adams could potentially serve as a replacement for Tyler Lockett, who may be released by the Seahawks this offseason. Lockett, now in his early 30s, has seen a decline in production and carries a hefty 2025 salary. Seattle could save $17 million by moving on from him, and Adams would likely come at a lower cost.

However, a more probable landing spot for Adams is with one of Seattle’s biggest rivals—the San Francisco 49ers. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel has reportedly been granted permission to seek a trade, and multiple teams are expected to be interested in acquiring him. Samuel remains relatively affordable as he enters the final year of his contract.

If the 49ers trade Samuel, they may look to replace him with an experienced, high-caliber receiver. Adams could be an ideal fit. Samuel’s 2025 cap hit is just over $15 million, while Adams has no guaranteed money left on his deal. Given his age (32), Adams isn’t expected to command a massive contract, allowing the 49ers to swap Samuel for Adams while saving money with a post-June 1 trade designation.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Adams prefers to play for a West Coast team. He’s a California native who attended high school in Palo Alto, just 20 minutes from Santa Clara, where the 49ers play. A move to San Francisco seems like a natural fit.

Under head coach Kyle Shanahan, Adams could thrive in the 49ers’ system. For the Seahawks, that would mean facing him twice a year—an unwelcome challenge, even if just for one season.
